Our Story
From Lancashire kitchens to an Austin tearoom
Tea is in my DNA.
Growing up in Lancashire, England, afternoon tea wasn’t just a treat — it was a way of life. A ritual taken very seriously by my family. My Nana introduced me to this beloved pastime when I was very young, and even now, the aroma of freshly baked scones instantly transports me back to her kitchen. They would appear as if by magic, alongside delicate cucumber sandwiches and a steaming pot of Earl Grey, ready to be shared with a good natter in good company.
Lancashire’s rich tea culture, with cafés and tea rooms on nearly every corner, shaped my love of baking and traditional recipes. I was constantly inspired to hone the skills that would stay with me for life. But more than the baking itself, it was that moment of pause, of connecting, sharing, and savoring good tea, that stayed with me most, and I’ve always wanted to bring that to others.

Bringing a Little Bit of England to Austin
In 2012, after marrying a handsome American and moving to Austin, Texas, I found the perfect spot for an English-inspired tearoom. The vintage charm, intimate atmosphere, and character of the space felt like an invitation to recreate a little piece of home — and to introduce Austinites to the pleasure of authentic afternoon tea, done properly, warmly, and with heart.

And so, Austin English Tea Company was born.

Years later, I’m still happily following in Nana’s footsteps, bringing out pots of perfectly brewed loose-leaf tea, scones generously smothered with jam and clotted cream, and rich, decadent sweets served with care and pride.
More Than Tea
Afternoon tea is about far more than food and drink; it’s an experience steeped in history and meaning. The tradition dates back to the 19th century, when Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, began taking tea and light bites in the afternoon to bridge the long gap before dinner. What started as a small indulgence soon became a cherished British custom.

Today, afternoon tea can be a chance to dress up and feel a little fancy — teacup held just so (pinkie up is entirely optional), crisp tablecloths laden with treats, conversation flowing as freely as the tea. Or it can be something simpler: mugs of tea, scones, and a quiet catch-up at home.

Either way, the heart of it remains the same; a mid-afternoon pause, and a chance to reconnect.
We can’t wait to welcome you and your party to our tearoom.
